JUDGES CHOICE

MAGAZINE – COMPLETE

HARVARD UNIVERSITY GRADUATE SCHOOL OF EDUCATION

Harvard Ed., Fall/Winter 2023

Patrick Mitchell, Modus Operandi Design/Designer

Lory Hough/Editor-in-Chief

“I chose the Fall/Winter 2023 issue of Harvard Ed. because of the strong use of scale, control of white space through grid, and diversity of imagery styles. All of the design choices and art direction seem to support the editorial voice of each section in a manner that doesn’t seem gratuitous. In fact, it’s quite the opposite — the complementary nature of the visuals (type as image, illustration, photography) and the text are very well considered and enhance the reading experience. It is smart design throughout. In an era of multimedia expressions this seems quite necessary for a print piece. It is contemporary yet still honors the tradition of the magazine/editorial design.”

“I thoroughly enjoyed all of Boston University’s magazine entries, but this one really snagged my attention and stayed at the forefront of my mind. The contrast of elements that create such fun and energetic designs had me invested in every spread. The piece felt both versatile visually but still cohesive in overall branding. Beautiful range and harmony!”

BETHEL UNIVERSITY

Textura Magazine, Volume 4

“This was a really tough choice … so many great entries. I chose Textura Magazine (Bethel University) because this magazine was not only beautifully designed (rich & contrasting colors, layered photography and dynamic layouts) but it also celebrates the Indian culture and educates the reader. Every single layout catches my attention and draws me in.”

“The title for this campaign is very fitting! I absolutely love the energy of this campaign and the overall execution throughout. The secondary colors add a lot of life and are great complements to the primary brand colors, and I love the imagery selections and treatment. It is evident the thought and planning that went into developing the environmental graphics and how those would work within the architecture of the buildings. Throughout all the different mediums, the vibe is clear and well communicated. I appreciate how they have thought through each touchpoint and created a very cohesive and convincing look and feel from very vibrant and eclectic elements. Amazing!”

“I chose this design for its visual impact, the sophisticated yet straight-forward use of copy, and the clever use of the existing logo design. The brilliance and vibrancy of the graphic draws the eye directly to the focal point, and pairs well with the bold tagline. The integration of the graphic circling the portraits gives balance and depth, while the typography generates curiosity and empowerment.”

“While there are many worthy candidates, the Integrated Campaign entry submitted by HEC Montréal, titled, Where Opportunities Are Created, was unmatched, as is their In-House Portfolio. The level of sophistication and execution surpasses all other entries. The international feel aligns with the expectation of an institution of higher learning located in Montréal. The output is on par with top-notch agencies around the world.”
